Table of Contents
What is a Spell Jar?
Spell jars are containers filled with spiritual intentions and various ingredients, such as herbs, crystals, small items, etc. They hold the spell’s energy and are easy to move. These simple charms are also known as Witches’ Bottles and have roots in many ancient spiritual practices.
For example, in ancient Egypt, people were buried with small jars in protective rituals to keep them safe in the afterlife. Spell jars are also very similar to the Hoodoo spiritual tradition of using gris-gris bags or mojo for spiritual protection and to attract positive intentions.
In England during the 17th century, Joseph Glanvill mentions Witch Bottles in his work Saducismus triumphatus: or, Full and plain evidence concerning witches and apparitions. These bottles were often filled with objects like pins, nails, urine, or herbs and buried near homes to ward off evil spirits or curses.
Modern Witchcraft Spell Jars
Spell jars are a popular spell for many types of witches and spiritual practitioners in modern witchcraft. Plus, they’re versatile and customizable!
Spell jars are used to attract love, prosperity, healing, protection, and many other purposes. Spiritual practitioners can easily customize their spell jars by adding ingredients that resonate with them. Additionally, they’ll infuse the spell jar with their energy and intention.
How Long Do Spell Jars Last?
Several factors determine the lifespan of a spell jar. A crucial aspect is how frequently you use its spiritual energy. Over time, the spiritual energy in the jar will be drained as it gives it to the spell.
To keep your spell jar working well, it’s a good idea to refresh it regularly. Many spiritual practitioners do this during the full moon ritual or at the beginning of the month. This helps to replenish the energy and keep the spell effective. I normally like to give it a good shake, too!
Where Do I Put My Spell Jar?
A popular place to put a spell jar is under your bed. This allows you to soak up its spiritual energy while you sleep. In fact, it might make the spell stronger because your subconscious mind is more open to receiving its intentions during sleep.
You can also keep your spell jar on your altar or in a meaningful place to you. You can also place it on a windowsill, a mantle, or a room in your home where you meditate or practice your craft.
For example, let’s say you’ve created a spell jar for protection. After charging it with your intentions, you might place it by your front door to ward off negative energy from entering your home. However, maybe you made a spell jar for love; you could place it in your bedroom or wear it close to your heart.
How To Make Spell Jars
When making spell jars to align with your intentions, remember to remember to stay focused and choose ingredients that resonate with your goal.
This section will help you make your own DIY Spell Jars. If you’re looking for more guidance or specific spell recipes, keep reading for spell recipes!
Set Your Intentions
Begin by clearly defining your intention for the spell jar. One specific and focused intention is important, whether it’s for love, protection, or prosperity. This will help you gather the right supplies and ingredients to make your spell as powerful as possible.
Choose a Container
When you scroll online, you probably come across images of small glass jars. Feel free to use one of these if that’s your preference. I think this is a great option if your spell jar will be in a visible area or if you plan to cleanse and reuse it. It also looks prettier if you’ll be wearing the spell jar around your neck.
However, I’d like to challenge you to get creative and choose a more environmentally friendly, biodegradable container! Here are a few ideas to help you get started!
- Blown out Eggshells
- Sea shells
- Fruit (oranges, limes, lemons, strawberries, etc.)
- Cardboard toilet paper tubes
- Newspaper or Magazine paper
- Gift or paper boxes
- Ice Cubes (similar to Freezer Spells)
- Nutshells
- Jalapeño, dried gourd, or any other vegetable
- Tree bark
- Leaves
- Used glass candle jars, pill bottles, spice jars, mason jars, honey jars, tea tins, baby food jars, or condiment jars (okay, not biodegradable, but good reusable items)
Gather Your Supplies
When making your spell jar, use ingredients that align with your intention. Avoid using too many of them so they don’t compete with each other. Overloading the jar can diminish its effectiveness.
Feel free to include anything that resonates with you! I prefer to add items that are completely bio-degradable, but it’s your spiritual practice, so the choice is yours! Here are some ideas to help get you started!
- Herbs (rosemary for protection, lavender for calming, cinnamon for prosperity, etc.)
- Crystals (amethyst for spiritual growth, rose quartz for love, citrine for abundance, etc.)
- Sigils (learn how to make your own here)
- Dried Flowers (rose petals for love, dandelion seeds to make wishes come true, sunflower petals for happiness, etc.)
- Pagan or Witchcraft Symbols you find meaningful
- Personal Items ( a piece of jewelry, a small photograph, charms, trinkets, etc.)
- Salt (for purification and protection)
- Honey (to attract sweetness and make it stick)
- Money (coins or bills)
- Petition Paper (a piece of paper with your intention or spell written on it)
- Feathers
- Moon Water (water charged under the moon’s light to absorb its energy)
- Taglock (a lock of hair, fingernails, spit, etc.)
- Bay Leaf
- Biodegradable Glitter
- Gum (to help make it stick)
- Anointing Oil (oils that match your spiritual intentions, olive, avocado, coconut, etc.)
- Small rocks
- Sealing Wax (to seal the jar once it’s filled)
- Ash
- Thorns
Cleanse Your Space
Cleansing your space before making a spell jar is essential to banish negative energy and create a sacred space for your practice. You can use sound, smoke, crystals, visualization, or any cleansing method of your choice.
Remember to cleanse your spell jar and any tools you’re using!
Begin the Jar Spell
Now, it’s time to add your ingredients. Place your herbal ingredients, notes, etc., into the jar. Remain focused on your intentions and visualize your desired outcome.
Infuse the jar with your spiritual energy in the method of your choice. Ideas include playing music, chanting, or repeating an affirmation. Charging the Jar Spell with your intention and energy is very important. Take your time and allow yourself to fully connect with the spell.
Close the Ritual
Before you close, you want to seal the jar spell to complete the ritual and combine the spiritual energy. You can seal it with paper mache or wrap it in ribbon, twine, wire, or string. I like to use a bit of candle color magic and seal it with wax. Feel free to paint or decorate the jar’s exterior however you choose.
When sealing the jar, imagine your intention being locked in place. Keep your spell jar around as long as you need it.
Disposal
When you’re done with the spell, remember to dispose of your spell jar in an environmentally friendly way! If you used a biodegradable item, feel free to burn it, bury it in the earth, compost it, place it near a crossroads, or throw it away.
If you used a glass jar or other reusable container, disassemble it and cleanse it with salt water or the method of your choice. This is totally okay if the spell wasn’t meant for harmful purposes. If the contents are kind of gross looking at this point, and you’d rather not open it, feel free to throw it in the trash.

Sour Jar Spell
A Sour Jar Spell is a powerful way to sour someone’s life or situation. It’s a form of magical revenge used to make someone “sit in their own bitterness.” This spell involves using a lemon as a container to hold the negative energy directed towards the target person.
Remember, spellwork should be done with caution and consideration for the potential consequences. You can also use chili powder, black pepper, citrus juice, red pepper flakes, sour candies, hot sauce, dried citrus peels, cayenne pepper, nails, a wasp nest, nails, or other ingredients that resonate with you.

Prepare the Lemon: Write the person’s name and your intention on the piece of paper. Fold the paper away from you and place it inside the lemon.
Add Ingredients: Add a splash of vinegar and a few drops of hot sauce into the lemon. These ingredients symbolize bitterness and hostility.

Wrap the Lemon: Wrap string around the lemon multiple times and tie it with a knot to symbolize sealing the person’s fate.
Dispose of the Lemon: Dispose of the lemon by throwing it away in a place where it can decay naturally away from you. Preferably somewhere gross, like a landfill or
Cleansing: After performing the spell, cleanse yourself and your space one final time.
Moonlight Sugar Jar Spell
This Sugar Jar Spell is for sweet happiness and good luck. It will need to be performed beneath the moon phase of your choice. I’d recommend a Full Moon (for success and goals coming to fruition) or a Black Moon (which represents happiness and good luck), but the choice is up to you!
Gather Your Supplies
- A small glass jar with a lid
- Sugar (to sweeten intentions)
- Biodegradable glitter (for a touch of extra magic)
- Dried lavender buds (for happiness and peace)
- Petition paper and pen for writing your intention
- String or ribbon of your choice
- Optional: Use color magic with silver ribbon for inspiration, dreams, and lunar energy
Begin the Moonlight Sugar Jar Spell
Set Your Intention: Sit in a quiet, comfortable space where you can focus. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself, and cleanse the area and jar. Play some music that fills you up with joy and happiness. Allow yourself to sit for a few moments, simply feeling this happiness. Feel free to dance!
Prepare the Jar: Take the small glass jar and add a layer of sugar to the bottom. Sprinkle in some biodegradable glitter and dried lavender buds.
Create Your Petition Paper: Write down your intentions on the petition paper and fold it small enough to place in the jar. If you need help, here’s one of my favorites: Beneath this moonbeam’s glow, may happiness always flow.
Seal the Jar: Close the jar and seal the magic within by tying a string or ribbon around the neck of the jar.
Add The Final Touches
Infuse with Lunar Energy: Hold it in your hands, and feel the happy emotions flowing between you and the spell jar. Place the container under the Full Moon, allowing it to be infused with lunar energy. Alternatively, you could add a few drops of Moon Water to the spell jar before sealing it.

Anxiety Spell Jar
If you’re looking for a way to ease anxiety and promote a sense of calm, this Anti-Anxiety Spell Jar could be the perfect solution. Using the soothing properties of dried lavender buds with powerful sigil magic, this spell jar is a simple way to bring peace and calm to your life.
Gather Your Supplies
- Dried lavender buds
- Dandelion head that’s gone to seed
- Blown-out eggshell (leave a top opening big enough to add lavender and dandelion)
- Tissue paper in a color of your choice
- Mod Podge (or a similar product (I’ve also tried watering down Elmer’s Glue with good results)
- Sharpie marker in a color of your choice
Begin the Anxiety Spell Jar Ritual
Set Your Sacred Space: Sit in a quiet, comfortable space where you can focus. Take a few deep breaths to center yourself, and cleanse the area and supplies.
Fill the Eggshell: Fill the eggshell with a pinch of dried lavender buds and a dandelion head gone to seed.
Seal the Eggshell: Cut a piece of colored tissue paper and use Mod Podge to seal the eggshell (similar to paper mache). Apply a thin Mod Podge layer to the eggshell’s outside rim, place the tissue paper over it, and press down gently. Apply a few more layers of tissue paper to seal it in place. Let it dry completely.
Add The Final Touches
Create and Draw a Sigil: Make your own sigil representing what peace and relief from anxiety feel like to you. If you need more help, check out my YouTube video: How to Make Sigils. Using a Sharpie or marker, carefully draw a sigil of your own creation on the outside of the eggshell.
Meditate and Activate the Sigil: Hold the finished eggshell in your hand and take a few deep breaths. Visualize and feel a calming wave of peaceful energy wash over you. When you feel ready, blow gently on the sigil to activate it.
Final Steps: Keep your Anxiety Spell Jar on your altar, beneath your bed, or in a safe place where it won’t be disturbed. Whenever you feel anxious, hold the jar in your hands and focus on the sigil to help calm your mind.
