What is a Dark Moon?

The Dark Moon, also known as the Balsamic Moon, occurs about two days before the New Moon when the sky is completely dark. During this phase, the last bit of light from the waning moon disappears, but the faint light of the crescent New Moon has not yet appeared.

This phase of quiet reflection invites us to embrace the darkness as a natural part of life’s cycles. It’s a time to let go of the past, discover hidden truths, and get ready for fresh starts.

During this time, many spiritual practitioners perform rituals to release what no longer serves them and set intentions for growth and transformation.

Dark Moon Spiritual Meaning

The spiritual meaning of the Dark Moon phase centers around reflection, self-discovery, and renewal. It represents a time of diving deep into the shadows of the self, confronting emotions, and experiencing personal transformation.

The Dark Moon encourages us to release what no longer serves us, embrace stillness, and connect with our intuition’s wisdom. It’s a period of rest, reflection, and preparation for new beginnings, symbolizing the cycle of endings and beginnings in life. It’s still connected to the previous lunar cycle and provides a significant void to rest and reflect as this cycle comes to a close.

When is the Next Dark Moon?

A Dark Moon rises approximately two days before the monthly New Moon lunar cycle. The moon cannot be seen during this time, and the night sky is completely dark.

FYI, the night of a Dark Moon is the absolute BEST TIME for stargazing! My husband and I love to take a night drive away from city lights to look at the night sky. I use the Star Walk app (not sponsored; I truly love it) to identify constellations, satellites, and other points of interest.

One time, we saw a flashing effect created by the reflective surface of a tumbling satellite. I didn’t even know those existed before that! It was so beautiful, and I’ll never forget it.

Dark Moon vs New Moon vs Black Moon

The Dark Moon, New Moon, and Black Moon are different phases of the moon, each with its own physical difference and spiritual meanings.

Physical Differences

The Dark Moon occurs approximately two days before the New Moon when the sky is completely dark, with no visible lunar illumination. This phase marks the end of the waning crescent phase and the beginning of the waxing crescent phase.

The New Moon is the first visible crescent after the Dark Moon. It appears as a faint sliver of light in the night sky, marking the start of a new lunar cycle.

A Black Moon, however, refers to a rare event when there are two New Moons in a calendar month. It’s the second New Moon in a month, often considered energetically powerful and a potent time for setting intentions and manifesting desires.

Spiritual Differences

Spiritually, the Dark Moon is a time for self-reflection, letting go, and getting ready for change. It encourages us to explore our feelings and embrace personal growth.

The New Moon represents new beginnings, fresh starts, and intentions, inspiring us to grow and be creative.

Since a Black Moon occurs less often, it makes manifestations and spiritual intentions more powerful. It’s a spiritually charged time to focus on our goals with extra strength.

Gather Your Supplies

  • Purple Taper or Chime Candle (to represent wisdom, the otherworld, and spiritual transformation)
  • Ground Sage (to promote wisdom and clarity)
  • Olive oil (excellent anointing oil for healing and renewal)
  • Matches or a lighter
  • Fire-safe dish or bowl

Prepare Your Sacred Space

Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can perform your ritual without distractions. Cleanse the space in the method of your choice.

Add any spiritual symbols of your choice. Using a SMALL amount of olive oil, anoint your chime candle by gently rubbing the oil onto the candle from the top downwards while focusing on your intentions. This will draw your intentions toward you. Focus on your healing, renewal, wisdom, and spiritual transformation intentions.

Once your candle is covered in olive oil, roll it in the ground sage. If you need more help, check out my YouTube video, How to Anoint and Dress a Spell Candle, for a complete step-by-step tutorial!

Begin Your Dark Moon Ritual

Place the purple taper candle in the center of the fire-safe dish or bowl. Light the purple candle with matches or a lighter. As the flame ignites, envision yourself stepping into the energy of the Dark Moon, embracing its mysteries and transformative power.

Sit quietly and meditate on the candle flame. Reflect on areas of your life where you seek wisdom, healing, and renewal. Allow any insights or intuitive messages to come forth.

Close the Ritual

Spend as much time as you need in meditation and contemplation, soaking in the energy of the Dark Moon and the symbolism of the purple candle. Allow the candle to burn down completely. Express gratitude for the insights, wisdom, and transformation received during the ritual.

Take a few moments to ground yourself after the ritual. You may want to journal your experiences, insights, and messages received during the Dark Moon candle ritual in your Grimoire or Wiccan Book of Shadows.

Visit A Dark Sky Park

Stargazing is always a wonderful way to connect with a Dark Moon, but sometimes there’s too much light pollution for the best views. In fact, the United States Department of Energy states that we don’t use approximately 35% of the light we create. This costs just over 3 billion dollars and 21 million tons of carbon dioxide each year.

Dark Sky Parks and Reserves have taken steps to reduce light emitted at night. In doing so, it’s eliminated substantial amounts of light waste.

A Dark Moon makes for some optimal starry night and Milky Way views! You can find an International Dark Sky Park near you here or an International Dark Sky Reserve here.

Dark Moon vs Full Moon

The Dark Moon is a quiet time for inner reflection and preparing for new beginnings. It’s like a seed underground, getting ready to sprout. However, the Full Moon is a time of climax and energy. Now, we can celebrate our achievements and manifested desires.

The Dark Moon’s energy flows inward, representing introspection and internal work. Yet the Full Moon’s energy flows outward and emphasizes making things happen and celebrating achievements.
