What is a New Moon?
A New Moon is the beginning of a lunar cycle, making it a time of renewal and limitless potential. It appears in the sky as a delicate crescent, barely visible yet brimming with possibility. A New Moon offers us a blank canvas to set intentions and sow the seeds of our dreams.
New Moons are often confused with Dark Moons and Black Moons. However, a Dark Moon takes place about two days before a New Moon when there is no visible Moon in the sky. A Dark Moon is a moment to rest, pause, and reset.
Black Moons are similar to the definition of a Blue Moon. However, Black Moons are when two NEW MOONS take place within the same month or season instead of two FULL MOONS.
New Moon Spiritual Meaning
The New Moon isn’t just about setting intentions; it’s also about connecting deeply with our emotions and inner selves. It’s a moment to pause, listen to our hearts, and understand what we truly want in life.
During the New Moon, it’s important to be present and notice the good already in your life. This can help you imagine even better things for the future, grow emotionally, and heal old wounds.
People often wonder how to tap into the New Moon’s power when it’s not visible in the sky. But even if you can’t see it, the New Moon’s energy still affects us, just like it affects the ocean tides. It’s a quiet yet powerful force.
Spiritually, the New Moon is like hitting a reset button, giving you a clean slate to work with. That’s why it’s a great time for setting intentions and manifesting what we want in life.

Gather Your Supplies
- Purple Chime Candle (purple is preferred for manifestations, but feel free to use any candle color of your choice)
- Olive oil (excellent anointing oil for healing and renewal**)
- Nutmeg (promotes good luck**)
- Orange zest (promotes good luck**)
- Matches or a lighter
- Fire-safe dish or bowl
Prepare Your Space
Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can perform your ritual without distractions. Cleanse the space in the method of your choice.
Take a few moments to center yourself and set your intentions for the ritual. Focus on what you wish to manifest in your life during this New Moon cycle.
Anoint Your Candle
Using a SMALL amount of olive oil, anoint your chime candle by gently rubbing the oil onto the candle from the top downwards while focusing on your intentions. This will draw your manifestation toward you.
Once your chime candle is covered in olive oil, roll it in a mixture of nutmeg and orange zest.
Begin New Moon Ritual
Place your candle in a safe holder or on a plate, then light it using matches or a lighter. As you do so, visualize your intentions coming to fruition and imagine yourself already experiencing the desired outcome.
Sit quietly with your candle and focus your energy on your intentions. Allow yourself to feel the emotions associated with manifesting your desires, whether it’s joy, gratitude, or excitement.
While the candle burns, feel free to interpret the Candle Flame’s Meaning or Read the Smoke.
Close the Ritual
Allow the candle to burn down completely. Express gratitude to the Universe, the New Moon, or any spiritual guides you work with for their support in manifesting your intentions.
Take a few deep breaths to ground yourself back into the present moment. Trust that your intentions have been set in motion and know the Universe is working to bring them to fruition.

New Moon Ritual for Fresh Starts
A New Moon is a special time for letting go of anything weighing us down so we can make room for new beginnings and fresh intentions.
This ritual is a chance to release anything negative or holding us back, like bad thoughts, habits, or anything you want to release.
Cord-cutting rituals are also great to incorporate during the New Moon phase. Read about Cord-cutting rituals here, or watch my step-by-step YouTube video for more information.
Gather Your Supplies
- Piece of Paper (aka petition paper)
- Pen or pencil
- Fire-safe dish, bowl, or outdoor fire pit
- Lighters or matches
Prepare Your Sacred Space
Begin by finding a quiet and comfortable space to connect with the energy of the New Moon. You can do this ritual indoors or outdoors!
Cleanse the space in the method of your choice. Take a few deep breaths to ground yourself and set your intentions for the ritual.
Begin Your New Moon Ritual
Using your pen and paper, write a heartfelt letter to something you’re ready to release from your life. This could be a habit, a relationship, a fear, or any other aspect that no longer serves your highest good.
Pour your emotions into the letter, expressing gratitude for the lessons learned and acknowledging that it’s time to let go. When you’re ready, place your letter in a safe place to be burned. Ensure there are no nearby flammable materials. If desired, have a small bowl of water nearby for safety.
Use matches or a lighter to ignite the letter. As the flames consume the paper, visualize releasing the energy of what you’ve written, allowing it to dissolve into the Universe.
Affirmation For Release
As you watch the letter burn, recite the following affirmation aloud or silently to yourself:
I release anything that no longer serves me. I let go of negative habits, thoughts, and fears.
I embrace the path of positivity and welcome new opportunities into my life. With the energy of the New Moon, I set myself free.

Close the Ritual
Take a moment to thank the New Moon for its supportive energy and guidance. Feel gratitude for the cleansing and release process.
Close your eyes and spend a few moments in meditation. Visualize yourself surrounded by a radiant light, filling you with positivity, love, peace, and freedom. Feel the gentle embrace of the New Moon energy, nurturing and supporting you on your journey forward.
When you feel ready, gently open your eyes and return to the present moment. Carry the energy of your ritual with you as you move forward into the new lunar cycle.

New Moon vs Full Moon: What’s the Difference?
Physically, it’s easy to see the difference between a New Moon and a Full Moon: one looks like a delicate crescent, while the other is a bright, round circle in the sky.
However, to spiritual practitioners, a New Moon and a Full Moon represent different intentions. Both phases are important for our spiritual journey because they offer chances for growth and manifesting. Each phase has a role to play in helping us along our spiritual path.
The New Moon is all about new beginnings and setting intentions, like planting seeds in a garden. It’s a fresh start to make plans for what we want to achieve during this lunar cycle.
A Full Moon, on the other hand, is a time of completion and fulfilled goals. It’s the peak of the moon’s cycle. Hopefully, when the Full Moon rises, we can see the results of our original intentions from the New Moon.
