Green witchcraft is a natural-based spiritual practice that draws power from the earth, wild herbs, and the magic elements.

In this article I’ll explain more in-depth about green witches, their meaning, what they practice, how to include it in your daily life, book recommendations, and a candle spell to capture Nature’s blessings. It will be especially helpful for beginners!

Please note that I make every effort to ensure this information is correct and accurate through my own experiences and referencing sources throughout AND at the bottom of this article.

What is a Green Witch?

A Green Witch draws power from Nature and infuses it into their spiritual practice.

They’re sometimes called Garden or Earth Witches. They’re deeply connected to the Earth and the changing seasons. They use the energy of plants, trees, and other natural elements in outdoor rituals, garden work, or herbal magic.

What is a Green Witch

Green Witch Meaning

Green Witchcraft attracts people who feel a strong connection to the earth. Many are drawn to this spiritual path because they recognize the healing benefits of Nature and want to develop a closer connection.

Many Green Witches also believe in Animism (the idea that everything in nature, including trees, rocks, and rivers, has a spirit). Green Witches honor this by respecting the natural world (including different types of Fae) and working in alignment with its spiritual energy.

How To Include Green Witchcraft in Your Daily Life

Adding Green Witchcraft to your daily routine means aligning yourself with nature’s rhythms. By making small but meaningful changes, you can easily use the power of Nature in your witchcraft practice.

Green Witch Grimoire and Wiccan Book of Shadows

Green witches often record magical experiences, plant knowledge, and rituals in a Grimoire, journal, or Wiccan Book of Shadows.

It’s a very personal reference source, and using one helps strengthen your practice. Here are a few ideas you could include in yours:

  • Press flowers, herbs, or leaves (sometimes I watercolor images of flowers and herbs)
  • Add your plant and botanical knowledge, recipes, and spells for future reference
  • Record the lunar phases and their impact on your energy or full moon rituals
  • Create a section for herbal correspondences and their magical uses
  • Keep track of garden planting cycles, seed growth, and harvests.

Celebrating Pagan Holidays

Align your practice with the natural cycles of the Pagan holidays and honor the changing seasons. Weave the magic of Green Witchcraft into these celebrations to connect and celebrate nature’s beautiful energy.

Green Witch Altar Ideas

Altars are sacred spaces where your magic thrives. Green Witch altars reflect the earth’s energy and are often filled with natural elements. Adding items from Nature enhances spellwork and rituals.

Use your altar to create a personal space to honor the season, work with herbs, and connect with your green path. Here are a few ideas to help get you started:

  • Create your own herb blend of incense for specific spiritual intentions
  • Forage Nature for magical tools or altar items, like branches, stones, or feathers.
  • Add plants, herbs, flowers, and dirt to the altar by placing them in jars or dressing candles.
  • Use crystals that resonate with you
  • Display pressed flowers or leaves to mark the changing seasons

Creating a Sigil Symbol For Green Witchcraft

A sigil is a powerful symbol representing your intentions. As a Green Witch, you can easily design your own to reflect your connection with Nature!

I like to draw sigils on eggs during the Spring tomato planting season. First, I dig a hole for the tomato plant. Then, I crack the egg (with the sigil drawn) and place it in the hole (shell and all). Then, I bury the tomato plant above it. As the tomato plant grows and thrives, my sigil’s intention does, too.

Here’s a simple process for creating your own Green Witch sigil:

  • Reflect on the goal or outcome you want
  • Design a sigil to align with your spiritual intention
  • Charge or activate the sigil in the method of your choice to release its intention

I used the Norse Rune Berkana (representing the cycle of life and female energy) and the Earth Element Symbol (representing seasons and natural life cycles). Lastly, they look like two Evil Eyes for added protection.

Moon Magic for the Green Witch

Green witches honor the moon cycles, which helps to blend their magic with nature. Every moon phase has a unique energy and can amplify your rituals.

You can also celebrate the monthly full moons and their spells and rituals:

Animal Symbolism

Green witches deeply respect all animals, insects, and creatures because they are sacred messengers from the natural world.

Observing their behaviors helps us understand Nature’s life cycles. For example, watching birds migrate or squirrels stashing food for Winter reminds us to do the same. Now may be a good time to make sure your home is ready for the cold season ahead.

If you keep seeing certain animals, they may be sending you a spiritual message. Pay attention to these animal symbolism encounters and connect them with your green path.

Deity Work

Green Witches are not required to worship any deities. However, if you’re interested, you may enjoy connecting with the goddess Brigid.

She’s the goddess of the anvil and forge (smithing), creativity, sacred wells, and water. The soil, meadows, water, and fire reflect her spirit and are formed from her essence.

Green Witchcraft and The Magic Elements

Green Witches often work with the five magic elements of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit. Some of them feel a particularly strong connection with the Earth element.

Magic elements and symbols have long been used in all studies, including alchemy, medicine, magic, and astrology. They represent Nature, the cycle of seasons, and spiritual energy. They’re some of the most basic but essential fundamentals of nature spirituality.

Here are a few ways to add these magical elements to your daily life:

  • Earth: Practice Earthing by walking barefoot on natural ground to recharge and ground yourself.
  • Air: Engage in breathwork or chanting to elevate your intentions and spiritually connect
  • Fire: Use bonfires or fire pits during celebrations to honor seasonal changes and rituals.
  • Water: Take moonlit baths infused with herbs for cleansing and renewal.
  • Spirit: Keep a journal to document your meditation experiences. Record anything that stood out to you.

Use Crystals

Crystals are connected with Nature, and their spiritual meanings will enhance your green witchcraft path. They help with meditation, spell work, ritual, and energy healing.

Choose any crystals that resonate with you! You may try working with green calcite or aventurine because their green color symbolizes Nature, personal growth, and abundance. Here are a few ways to use crystals in your practice:

  • Meditation: Hold a crystal during meditation to focus your intentions.
  • Crystal Grids: Create crystal grids to manifest specific goals.
  • Amulets: Carry crystals like black tourmaline as protective talismans.
  • Intentional Carrying: Select a crystal daily based on your needs and carry it with you (I’ve found jewelry is helpful for this)
  • Altar Work: Add crystals to your altar to enhance its spiritual energy.

Gardening and Herbalism

Green witches typically enjoy herbalism and gardening because it helps them maintain a harmonious balance with the natural world around them. You can easily grow your own herbs and use their magical intentions in your practice. Here are a few ideas to help get you started:

  • Create your own tea blends for spells and healing purposes.
  • Put out offerings of herbs and flowers for the Fae.
  • Use garden clippings to craft protection charms or spell sachets.
  • Collect seeds from your plants to use in rituals and future planting.
  • Use herbs in craft-making projects like soap, candles, or bath salts.
  • Create a moon garden by planting flowers that bloom at night.
  • Dry your herbs and flowers to make incense blends or herbal bundles for cleansing.
  • Make your own healing concoctions, tinctures, and salves using herbs.

Environmentalism with Green Witchcraft

Honor and protect the earth by prioritizing environmentalism in your practice. Green witches see Nature as sacred and do their best to live in harmony with it.

Green witches align their magical energy with the health and well-being of the Earth, so it’s important to prioritize sustainable living, ethical sourcing, and eco-friendly practices. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

  • Reduce waste and give back to Nature by composting.
  • Donate compost to a loved one, neighbor, or local community garden if you don’t have a garden.
  • Try to buy as ethically as possible, choosing fabrics like organic cotton, linen, or hemp.
  • Reuse glass jars for spell work, storage, or as plant containers.
  • Practice green magic by upcycling items and magical tools for your altar.
  • Participate in local cleanups or plant trees to honor the Earth.
  • Create spells or rituals focused on environmental healing and protection.
  • Use eco-friendly candles, incense, and tools in your practice.
  • Support local and sustainable farmers or artisans for your magical ingredients.

Books for Green Witchcraft Beginners

Grow your knowledge of green witchcraft by drawing inspiration from all kinds of books. These may be about Herbalism, natural healing remedies, plant spiritual meanings, folklore, plant identification, or environmentalism.

Here are a few books I’d recommend for Green Witches:

Nature’s Blessings: A Powerful Green Witchcraft Candle Spell

This candle magic spell will help a Green Witch bring the spiritual energy of Nature and abundance into their home. We’re using a green candle because it symbolizes growth and prosperity.

This ritual infuses the elements of nature into your surroundings, promoting peace, wisdom, and protection.

Gather Your Supplies

  • 1 Green Pillar Candle (or candle type of your choice)
  • Almond Oil (for money, prosperity, and wisdom)
  • Dried Lavender Buds (for peace and joy)
  • Ground Dried Sage (for protection)
  • Lighter or Matches
  • Firesafe candle holder

Prepare Your Space

Cleanse your space using the method of your choice. Make sure you have all the supplies you need. Take a few moments to calm your mind and center your thoughts. When you’re ready, raise your vibration to begin casting this candle spell.

Dress The Spell Candle

Rub a small amount of almond oil from the top of the candle down to the bottom to call in the energy of Nature and abundance. Remember to focus on this intention as you dress the candle. (Watch my video for a step-by-step tutorial).

Let the Magic Work

When you’re ready, light the candle in the fireproof candle holder. I prefer to let mine burn down completely. If you must, snuff out the flame, but avoid blowing it out. Relight the candle and repeat as needed to allow more spiritual energy to infuse into your home.

What’s the Difference Between Kitchen and Green Witchcraft?

Green and Kitchen Witches both use Nature’s spiritual energy, but they do so in slightly different ways. Kitchen Witches concentrate their magic in the home, particularly the kitchen.

Kitchen Witches see the kitchen as a sacred place where meals and healing recipes are lovingly prepared. However, Green Witches draw their power from the natural world. These practices frequently overlap, so feel free to weave both into your witchcraft journey!
